Special Features
The “triangle” body type generally has a smaller upper body compared to lower body. With the trend of a straight looking upper body and a more curved lower body it can make you appear bottom-heavy. On top you should wear brightly colored fabrics with prints and styles which visually emphasize and widen the shoulders and accentuate your waistline, which should be at your actual waist level or higher. Below the waist wear solid dark colors. This will give you an elongated look. Put less emphasis at the waist by avoiding ruffles or pleats which create fullness, or large pockets which can draw the eyes to this area.
What to Wear
- On top wear “empire” style lines, loose blouses, tops and dresses, cowl neck, gathered yokes in bodice, ruffles, breast pockets, and light colors.
- If you are considering a blouse it should be tailored to your body and not too baggy.
- The ideal length of blouse or top is at your waist or past your hips. Avoid having it end at your hips because this will draw attention to this area.
- Adding a belt at the waist will highlight your curves.
If you are considering a sweater this is a perfect example of cowl neck, slightly loose style, light color. The length preferably should be ending below the hips.
Any of these necklines are suitable and flattering for the triangular-shaped body: “V”, scooped, heart, square, “U”. They add a bit of femininity and softness and draw attention to this area and to your face, which is what you want.
Dresses that have an empire line like this can give the illusion of length creating a look of height and downplays and softens the area at the hips.
Skirts with slight fullness can be flattering. Wear A-line skirts or tulip skirts with high waist line and add high heels to elongate your legs.
Trousers or pants are best if straight cut or with a bit of flare. This includes jeans but make sure there is enough ease for them to hang nicely. You totally can wear skinny leg jeans also but I would recommend a high waist so it will give you a longer look.
What Not to Wear
- To avoid accentuating your disproportions stay away from wearing dark clothing on top matched with light on the bottom.
- You can have sleek or hidden pockets but you should try to stay away from skirts or pants with pockets below the waist line.
- Skirts that are too narrow or too full are least flattering. You do not need any extra trimmings for accents at the hip and thigh area.
- Large sized horizontal patterns create volume and this is what you want to avoid.
- Tops that are flared at the bottom, like a flounce or pendulum just add fullness which again is not necessary for you.
- Avoid top or blouse length that hang to the hips and are too baggy, as this will downplay your nice curves.
