Dressing the “Inverted Triangle” Shape

Special Features

This particular body type tends to have broad shoulders and more narrow hips. The disproportion is similar to the Triangle shaped body (Pear) but reverse. Your focus should be on long legs and downplaying the width above the waist. You want to think about balancing out your wider shoulders with more fullness in your clothing below the waist. You can achieve this by wearing wider leg pants, fit and flare type dresses. You want to create a vision of a vertical line through your choices of what to wear. An open single breasted jacket with a midi skirt ( ends at the calf level) would be a good choice to create that vertical line and minimize the width at your shoulders.

What to Wear

The full sleeve with puffy ends, the fullness at the waist with a wide belt and the straight pant leg all balance out the width at the shoulders create a nice elongated and balanced look. Other styles of pants that work well for you are also boyfriend style, wide leg or flared.

Soft flowing fabrics around the shoulders, the “V” neck and a wrap style dress with some fullness around the hips all downplay your broader shoulders and balance out your full body proportions and add a soft feminine look. The “U” shaped, cowl and crew neckline are all good choices to soften and bring in the width of your shoulders. A-line, fit and flare, sheath and midi style dresses will balance out your proportions and enhance your curves.

Single breasted jacket, with a narrow collar or no collar, long below the hips or at crotch level and left open is the ideal jacket that will balance out your proportions, and create a long look.
